![]() ![]() This prevented the game from bogging down with too many units (8 players x 50 pop. I think the designers of AOE put in the original 50 pop. That erases the too-confining limit of 50 (esepcially on larger maps), but doesn't tip the game into a "unitpalooza" with dozens and dozens of villagers stripping the land like locusts. and 1.0 speed, but I've loosened up recently on pop. The designers MEANT for you to have to make constant choices between 'guns and butter' and the game plays better if you keep this in by setting lower pops Such high populations are alike the US getting it's military for free. You need to blance your economy with your military, just like in real life. You need to manage your resources to select the upgrades and build the units and building You need to manage your vills to get resources They want it all and they want it now, but that's not what this game is about. PLayers wanting such a high population is a reflection of today's 'want it all mentality'. You're not supposed to be sitting aroud with 12,000 wood and 4000 stone because you have 90 villagers all over the map. Not to do so destroys the whole population management aspect of the game. If you are playing RM, you should keep the pop 75 or lower. So you want to get all the super units? Maybe what your supposed to do is make a choice: Ele's or Cents? Scythe or HHAs? The two previous posts confimr my opinion that higher pop limits take out the population management aspect of the game. What's the preferred pop setting for most players here? What do you think about my assertion that population management is something the designers built in and that too high a pop limit ruins that?Īnyone who lasts long enough can have a strong economy with a 150 pop, but only someone skilled at population management can keep a good economy going while fighting a war with a 50 pop. I've beaten several good players with the game set at 50 becasue they can't manage their population. It's high enough so that you can get a good economy going yet still have a decent military, but it's not so high that it doesn't force you to make deciosions later in the game, when the war is steaming along and you need to del a few vills to get some more HCs or HHAs. I usually set my pop limit at 75 and I've noticed most gamers in the rated rooms of the zone want it higher. Population management is as much a skill as learning a fast bronze or any other strat. Skimp a little on the econ for a slightly stronger mil? These choices aren't present when you set the pop limit so high. When you play with a 50 pop, you have to make choices. You just cranks out vills or boats or military to your heart's content.īut AoE and RoR are about making decisions. Having a 150 or 200 pop means you don't have to make any decisions whe it comes to population mangement. ![]() Personally, I think this ruins a large aspect of the game. It seems to me that most players like to up the population limit when playing RoR or AoE. ![]()
